The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that godparents should be “firm believers, able and ready to help the newly baptized — child or adult — on the road of Christian life” (CCC 1255). Godparents must, therefore, have a strong and living faith, and they should be supportive of or even instrumental in the catechesis and ongoing formation of the newly baptized person. Parents have major responsibilities for this sacrament.

Can. 873 of Canon Law states clearly there is to be only one male sponsor or one female sponsor or one of each for a Catholic Baptism.

Godparents play a significant role in the baptism of a person by serving as sponsors and supporting the individual in their faith journey. This reflects the communal aspect of faith in Catholicism, as we receive and share our faith within the Church as a community.
